Our concept
By definition, an ouzerie is a place where ouzo, among other things, is consumed.
Traditionally, whether on the mainland of the Hellenic Republic (the official name of Greece) or on one of the 9,000 Greek islands, it is customary to share ouzo and a few snacks on terraces, whether in towns or villages. A moment of traditional sharing. Created in Lesbos (apparently), this aperitif comes from the residue of pressed grapes flavored with anise.
OUR OUZERIE IN IXELLES
At the Ouzerie Mezedopolio, as in Greece, everything is done with simplicity and freshness, under the watchful eye of the owner, Georgios Tsigkalidis, originally from Thrace in northern Greece, not far from the Turkish border. Settled in Brussels since 1987, he became a cook in the Greek navy during his military service, a real calling card over there! Knowing all the facets of cuisine from across the country, Georgios is committed to authenticity.
OUR MENU
On the menu, you will naturally find the finest (revisited) specialties from Thrace and Thessaloniki (in the north) or the Peloponnese and Crete (in the south). And let's not forget Piraeus, the Cyclades, and many other regions. A multitude of small dishes to bring to the table and enjoy in a friendly atmosphere. This is what is commonly done in Greece in ouzeries. The more people there are at the table, the more there will be to nibble on!
MEZEDOPOLIO PRODUCTS
Here is a brief overview of traditional products. When it comes to alcohol, ouzo obviously stands out. Cold culinary specialties include: tzatziki, tarama (the real thing, delicious, not fluorescent pink but a natural white-beige color), ktipiti, and Cretan dakos. Hot mezes include grilled octopus and fried calamari, spanakopita (spinach pastries) and tyropita (cheese pastries). For meat lovers, we recommend our new specialty, veal stew with mavrodaphne wine, served with kritharoto and kefalograviera. We also offer traditional desserts such as homemade halvas (semolina cake), galaktoboureko (pastry with custard), baklava, kadaïfi, and many others.
